Cursor launches intelligent model router promising frontier quality at 60% lower cost
Cursor has launched Cursor Router, an intelligent routing system that automatically selects the most appropriate AI model for each coding request. Users set an Auto mode preference — Intelligence, Balance, or Cost — and the router dispatches to frontier models only when the task demands them, falling back to cheaper alternatives otherwise. The company says early-access customers saw no drop in quality while achieving a lower cost per commit compared to routing all requests to a top-tier model like Opus 4.8.
Cursor Router is available today on Teams and Enterprise plans across all Cursor surfaces. Admins can enable it per team, restrict which models are available, set organizational defaults, and block specific optimization modes for end users.
